Known as The Rodeo Capital of Texas, visitors can find out why the city of Mesquite earned that moniker at the fifth annual Real. Texas. Festival., which offers a round up of Lone Star activities.

Along with two days of rodeo events, attendees can enjoy:

Contests

  • A tournament to bring tears to your eyes, participants will try to eat as many peppers as possible in the Jalepeno-eating contest.
  • Which cook will taste victory in the Taste of Mesquite BBQ contest? Sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society, the spicy showdown will feature three meat categories– brisket, pork spare ribs and one-half chicken.
  • Performers will meet up at the mic for the Battle of the Bands. Cheer on your favorites as they vie for cash prizes and the chance to receive a complimentary professional recording package for a 3-song EP.

Music

  • Move your feet to the beat of tried and true Texas tunes performed by Stoney Larue, the Eli Young Band, AJ Castillo, Mark McKinney and Los Texmaniacs.

Attractions

  • Automobile enthusiasts will get revved up over the vintage vehicles on display at the Cowboys and Chrome Car Show. From Model T’s to Mustangs, four-wheel fans can take a mental drive down memory lane at the Mesquite Exhibit Hall.
  • Lone Star little ones will have fun in the Kid Korral area, where children can meet a new furry friend at the petting zoo, enjoy pint-sized rides and make a present for their parents at an arts & crafts booth, while both the young and the young at heart will enjoy the carnival and midway games.
  • Shop for a souvenir of your stay at arts & crafts booths, and browse among stalls selling true Texas food and retail products in the GoTexan Marketplace.
